Before I came to Wheelock, I did not know my identity outside my family structure, gender, or ethnicity. I did not know I was more than just a female, aunt, sister, daughter, or Hispanic. However, Wheelock has helped me to understand that you are more than just what people label you as.

Being a Person of Hispanic Background:  -It’s obvious that Wheelock still struggles with “race.”  -It is not easy to branch out to other race, more specifically white. It’s like the conversation is there, but not the friendship.  -I notice people stay with people who identify...

My experience with identity at Wheelock has been interesting. While I have changed, I have mostly learned more about my hobbies, my characteristics, my position on religion, and my political views. Through the diversity on campus, I have learned more about myself as an individual and have...

Americans are Americans, and showing differences between races had made me become more racist. I never saw a difference between races until I came here....

As identity goes at Wheelock, I feel that mine is very stifled. I am a girl with very conservative republican views, and am constantly having that be trashed by faculty, staff, as well as other students. You would think that a place that encourages identity would show respect for someone’s views...

Throughout my time at Wheelock, the continuously drilled theme is accepting others. When taking classes here, I felt that the community tries to make the minority or the gay/lesbian groups feel most comfortable on campus. Being white and straight, I feel overlooked, and that the campus has focused...

Diversity at Wheelock is a work in progress. I feel safe here, but you never know with what others feel.
