About Us

Writing as Social Action is a course offered at Wheelock College taught by Jenne Powers.

The course provides students with experiences and tools necessary to effect change through writing. It exposes students to historical and contemporary examples of writing that have contributed to social change. Students practice writing for different audiences, including peers and policymakers. At the end of the semester, the course culminates in a community action project designed by the class.

The objective for that class project is:

To give greater voice to marginalized identities at Wheelock, especially those that intersect with race, through creative writing and campus advocacy, creating a climate of greater respect and acceptance.
