When I was coming to Wheelock I was assigned who would be my first roommate. After I met her she immediately said, “I’m so happy you're white.” Confused, I asked her what she meant and she said she couldn’t tell from my Facebook picture because of the lighting and assumed the spelling of of my name meant I was Mexican. I had never heard this before, and I was taken back by how she was nervous for me to be Mexican. As I grew in Wheelock, I have learned more appropriate responses and how to educate others and myself; I am still shocked about that day, and that that was about the 3rd sentence said to me.
